1. How did you start your business 6th Scent Candle?

Ever since I was young, I have always been in love with candles. I adore the moment my favorite candle sparks to life, enveloping its sweet aroma into my room. In just a matter of minutes the fragrant scents make the air of the room come alive, persuading me to wind down for a tranquil nights rest. Waking up the next morning I feel truly refreshed and rested. Softy gazing into the heart of a burning candle reminds me of the literal meaning of my name-spread knowledge/intelligence-like a candle.

Having a candle in my room brings out the best in the environment and inspires me to be a better teacher. As an early childhood educator and teacher, I have made a lot of classroom decorations and educational materials sparkling my creativity. Combined with my love for art, creative ideas, organics, and candles, I thought it would be an amazing idea to make my own soy candles. I started making candles for my friends, and family and with their support I experimented with different soy candle recipes with natural ingredients. Now I proudly share my soy candles and delightful scents with you.

2. How do you go about creating or designing your product line?

For us, our scents selection is taken to the highest regard and we go through quite a process before finalizing our scents. Our chosen scents must elicit the following qualities:  are raw and organic in scent, evoke memories of the last time you naturally smelled the original source of the scent, and have a strong throw* that is natural in both cold and hot throws of the soy wax.

●      *Editors’ Note: When a candle has never been lit (or a melt has never been melted), the aroma that the wax gives off is called the cold scent throw, or "cold throw". When the wick of the candle is lit, the fragrant smell that is released from the candle is called the hot scent throw or "hot throw".

3. On average how many hours do you work on your business each week?

This is my full time business and I work 80 – 90 hours a week on it!

4. What’s the best part of owning your business? How about the toughest?

Cultivating relationships with other like minded business owners, interacting with customers and sharing our product, using your creativity to create new products, learn business, marketing, social media, developing strategies.  The toughest part is wearing so many hats and to grind hard but also know when to take care of yourself.

5. What's your definition of success for this business?

We would like to share the joy of having a scented space through a natural and sustainable means.  Success to us is seeing repeated customers happy, sharing with their friends and coming back to try more of our scents.

6. What’s next for you, your brand, or your business?

I have to develop many aspects of my business which is a continual and on-going process.  These include: my brand awareness, customer service skills, improving my market setups, and enhancing and creating new product lines.

7. How do you connect with the local business community? (ie. attending events, take part in collaborations, host workshops, etc.)

I connect with the community through social media, running collaborations giveaways and gift boxes on social media, attending many markets and meeting very interesting owners and customers, and having my own workshops/pop ins.

8. Any final remarks or anything else you want to share with our Made in the 604 readers?

I would like to take the time to thank you for reading the interview, I hope it shares with the 604 blog readers info about me, my business and the thoughts that surround the aspects of the business. Do feel free to drop by our stand and say “hi!”, I would love to meet you in person at a local market and personally show you my products.
