artbedo: Art inspired by Vancouver

Illustration of three art prints hung on the wall. There is a countertop with a yellow and blue lamp on the left, a small plant next to it, a candle in the middle, and a vase of tulips inside of a mason jar on top of a purple checkered cloth.

Tell us about yourself and your business. What’s your core mission and vision?

I am a self-taught artist and Masters of biomedical engineering graduate from UBC. Vancouver is my home and I love to capture the aspects that make the city unique; from the local businesses to food and culture. My artwork is mainly created using digital media and watercolour paints, but I love experimenting with different styles. When my business, artbedo, was created, I knew that I wanted part of my platform to give back to the community and benefit social change. A portion of all profits benefits the Downtown Eastside Women's Shelter as well as other Vancouver-based charities.

How did you start your business? What inspired you to take the leap into entrepreneurship?

Growing up, I've always been an artistic person. However, once I started university, I didn’t have much time for art. In May 2020, I graduated with my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and began my Masters of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering in the fall. At the same time, the world was in the midst of a global pandemic - which meant, for me, all classes were online. I was in a position of immense privilege to have some additional time on my hands, which led me to create art again. In October, I drew a local Vancouver business called “Federal Store” and to my surprise, they re-posted it on their account. I received such kind and positive feedback on this illustration, I decided to draw more of my favourite local spots around the city such as Livia on Commercial Dr. and Chinatown BBQ. From here, my account started to grow and it’s all been a whirlwind since then!

On average how many hours do you work on your business each week? Is this a side hustle or your full time job? If it's a side hustle, what is your "day" job?

I currently work full-time for Vancouver Coastal Health and spend approximately 20+ hours per week on artbedo (during the evenings and weekends)!

What’s the best part of owning your business? How about the toughest?

The best part of running a business is the opportunity to share my artwork with others and connect with them. I feel so luck to have been able to release new designs, experiment with different merchandise, raise over $1500 towards various charities, and collaborate with incredible businesses and companies! The toughest part has been learning how to balance both my job, artbedo, and taking time for myself.

How do you go about creating or designing your product line?

I draw most of my inspiration from everyday life and love to create work that evokes nostalgia!

What's your definition of success for this business?

I feel so fortunate to have the support from my family, friends, and thousands of people from off the internet who have made this transformation from a hobby to a business! It is already a dream come true!

What’s next for you, your brand, or your business?

I just hope to continue sharing my artwork with others and explore new ways to do so. I also want to keep giving back to the community!

How do you connect with the local business community? (ie. attending events, take part in collaborations, host workshops, etc.)

I love taking part in pop-ups around the city and connect face-to-face with people. I am also always open to new opportunities and collaborations with local businesses.
